Cranshaws Castle

This is a 15th-century pele located in Cranshaws. It is privately owned, meaning that the structure is still used as a residence. Additionally, the building is a protected one and listed as category A.

Cranshaws Castle or Cranshaws Tower was originally part of the Earldom of Dunbar and March. Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas, came into ownership of Cranshaws during that time.

In 1401, it was given to Sir John Swinton, 14th of that Ilk. When Swinton died during the Battle of Homildon Hill in 1402, the land passed to his son Sir John Swinton, 15th of that Ilk. It was this John Swinton who supposedly built the original castle.

During the 18th century, Cranshaws was re-acquired by another branch of the Douglas family, the Earls of Morton. Extensive renovations were carried out on the property by George Douglas, 13th Earl of Morton.

The castle was bought by Andrew Smith of Whitchester in 1895. By 1931, it was the property of his grand nephew.

The uncle of Mr S E A Landale restored the property in 1896/7. Today, it's still owned by the Landale family.

Since the property is private, literature lovers might prefer another spot to have a romantic picnic or stroll. That's not to be a problem though as there are a few spots you can head to for that matter.

Literature

It is said that Cranshaws Castle was the inspiration for Ravenswood Castle, which is the home of Edgar, the hero in the tragedy Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott.

Folklore

According to folklore, the castle is said to be the home of a Brownie, which is a legendary creature that resembles a hob, which is similar to a hobgoblin. It is the English counterpart of the German Heinzelmannchen, Scandinavian tomte and the Slavic domovol.
