Flower Delivery to Hay Mills with Clare Florist
Hay Mills is an area that's part of Small Heath in Birmingham City. It's known to be the home of steel wire factory that hails from the Victorian era. Hay Mill's History Hay Mill first appeared in written history when its owner, Hugh de la Haye, was recorded in 1171. Experts surmise that, back then, the area was the farmland of a medieval family and was surrounded by a live hedge of hawthorn trees.
This hedge (which probably was put up to keep cattle and other types of livestock from wandering and ensure they stayed close to the river) may have contributed to its name since the Old English word for a ?fenced or hedged land? was gehaeg. A moated hall named Hay Hall was built in the area in the 1300s. It came under the ownership of the Este family when the last of the de la Hays married Thomas Este. The hall still stands today.
One of the most well-known residents of Hay Mills was James Horsfall, who moved to the area in 1830 and was the inventor of the high-tensile steel wire. When he moved to Hay Mills, he converted an old water mill (which was originally part of the Hay Hall and had been used to produce swords and blades) into a steam-powered mill for wire fabrication. Later on, he merged his company with Joseph Webster's firm and began manufacturing and exporting piano wire to Europe. Horsfall patented a process that strengthened wires in the 1850s, and this caused his business to boom. His company had a monopoly on piano wires, and he began to manufacture wire for fishhooks, needles and umbrella frames. They were even commissioned to produce armoured wire for the first successful telegraph cable, which was used to connect the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. As his business continued to become profitable, Horsfall took it upon himself to create a church and a school building for his workers and their children. These developments led to the birth of the modern village of Hay Mills.
Hay Mills in the Modern World Hay Mills might not be as popular as the other areas in Birmingham, but it still is a must-see destination because it gives you a glimpse into the city's past and learn more about the local history. By spending time in this place, you'll get to check out Hay Hills and marvel at its intricate architecture. It is currently owned by an industrial firm and isn't accessible to the public (unless you have special permission), but you can still see it from the road. Don't forget to visit the Webster & Horsfall Company, which is still around today (despite being over a hundred years old!) and has specialised in manufacturing springs. Make sure to drop by Penns Hall (the original mill that Joseph Webster used) and explore St. Cyprian's Church (the church that James Horsfall built for his workers).
You can also take a look at St Cyprian's Church School (constructed by Horsfall for his workers' children); the small brick structure still stands today, though it's no longer used since it closed when the Redhill Board School opened in 1892.
