HISTORY

Needham Market grew around the wool combing industry but that ended when the plague came. The deadly disease swept the town from 1663 to 1665 and the town had to be chained at either end in order to prevent the spread of the plague. While the decision achieved its intention, it also came at the cost of losing two-thirds of the population.

It took Needham Market about 200 years to recover from the incident. The canalisation of River Gipping in the late 18th century and the introduction of the railway helped the town back to its feet.

There are two roads associated with the plague: Chainhouse Road (after the chains that ran across the eastern portion of town) and Causeway (a variation of “corpseway” as it was the route taken to transport victims out of town).  

Today, Needham Market is a bustling and busy town and Needham, Massachusetts is named after it as well.
