Flower Delivery to Coldean - A Small and Beautiful Suburb in Brighton
Coldean is a suburb that’s part of Brighton and Hove and is located on the north-eastern part of the city. It’s bordered by Stanmer Park, Wild Park, and the Ditchling Road ridge and has some urban parkland near its southern border. The suburb originally was called “Cold Dean” (with “dean” being the Anglo-Saxon word for “valley”), although the name morphed into its current spelling over the years.
A Look into Coldean’s History
Bronze Age huts have been unearthed in Coldean Lane, proving that humans had settled in the area around 4,000 years ago. Coldean originally had only a few farms and cottages over the years, but this changed in 1935 when its first housing development, the Parkside Estate, was created. The Second World War halted the development but, after the war, construction resumed and the houses on Middleton Rise, Forest Road, and Arlington Crescent were built. The development of Parkside Estate went on for several years, and the last houses in the estate were built between 1966 and 1969.
Coldean continued to grow over the years. It got its own library, the Coldean Library, in 1975 and a children’s playground called George Humphrey Park in 1989.
Coldean in the Modern Times
Today, Coldean is a great place to visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city for a while. There’s a pub on Lewes Road where you can sit back with a cold glass of ale and interact with the locals (and even make new friends!). You can also visit the library to catch up on your reading and join some of the community events that take place in it.
Don’t forget to visit St Mary Magdalen Church. It started as a flint barn that was built in the late 18th century and belonged to Coldean Farm, and it was transformed to a church in in 1955. Attend their Sunday service, or just drop by on a Wednesday morning to enjoy their weekly “Coffee and Chat” event and have a nice chat with the locals while enjoying a warm, steaming cup of java.
If you’re a nature lover, you’ll want to check out the green open spaces around the suburb. One of these is Wild Park, which is the largest Local Nature Reserve in Brighton and Hove and has many woodland walks, grazing fields, and biodiverse grasslands that you can explore. Observe the birds and sheep that graze in the fields, or challenge yourself to ascend the “ski slope”, a steep hill that will reward you with gorgeous views of Brighton and Hove.
