The History of Westbury on Trym

The earliest known history of Westbury on Trym actually pre-dates the founding of Bristol. Close to the beginning of the 9th century, King Offa of Mercia granted land to Aethelmund, his minister, which became the site of Westbury. A monastery was constructed on the property that held clergy who were married. Towards the end of the 10th century that practice changed when Oswald of Worcester rose to prominence. 12 monks were sent to the monastery to ensure that the new set of rules would be followed.

During that time, there was a new church as well as several other buildings constructed in the area. By the end of the 13th century, the monastery became a college complete with deans and canons. The structure was rebuilt in the 15th century so that it would resemble a castle complete with a gatehouse and turrets.
During the English Civil War, the Royalist Prince Rupert of the Rhine used the monastery as his quarters. The structure was set on fire in 1643 per his orders so that it could not be used by the Parliamentarians. Over the ensuing centuries, some of the college buildings were restored and today the Westbury College Gatehouse is now part of the National Trust that houses elderly people.
In Westbury on Trym you can also find the Church of the Holy Trinity which was constructed in 1194. The parish itself is rather large and includes exclaves such as Redland, Stoke Bishop, and several more that comprised of Avonmouth and Shirehampton. In 1866, the civil parish was created, Shirehampton was separated and in 1894 Redland followed suit.

By 1904, Westbury on Trym was absorbed into Bristol which has grown considerably over the past few centuries. Today, the suburb offers a considerable amount of history that adds to the flavour of Bristol and provides a wonderful look back into the past thanks to its surviving structures.
