Northborough first appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the year 656 where it's documented as Northburh. The name of the village is also listed as Norburg in an Assize Roll of 1202. Northborough's name means “northern burg or fortified settlement.”
The 1970s marked a period where the village experienced its largest change. This was a time when Northborough expanded thanks to the building of a new estate, and as such, the population grew along with it.
Northborough is home to several listed buildings, and they include:
Northborough Manor House – also known as Northborough Hall or Northborough Castle Farmhouse. This Grade I listed building is a medieval fortified manor house that was built by Roger Northburgh, the Bishop of Lichfield, between 1333 and 1336. Historian Anthony Emery calls the structure “one of the finest” fortified manors in Cambridgeshire.
Parish Church of St Andrew – located close to the manor house and features sections that date back to the late 12th century. Although there is no gravestone or marker to indicate the case, it is said that Elizabeth Cromwell (widow of Oliver) is buried in this church.
Exploring the area outside Northborough allows you to see what else Cambridgeshire has in store. Here's a list of attractions that might interest you:
Clare Cottage – home of English poet John Clare from 1793 to 1832.
Longthorpe Tower – features important and a near-complete collection of 14th-century wall paintings in northern Europe.
Peterborough Cathedral – formally known as the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew and also known as St Peter's Cathedral. The cathedral is known for its imposing Early English Gothic West Front and is one of the most important 12th-century structures to have remained largely intact.
