Located about 10 miles north of Cambridge in Cambridgeshire, the town of Waterbeach has enjoyed a long, rich history that continues to this day. Forming part of the administrative district of South Cambridgeshire, Waterbeach gets its name from being along the Car Dyke, an ancient Roman constructed waterway that can be traced to Lincoln.

The History of Waterbeach

There was no known settlement of the area even when the Romans built the Car Dyke which passed through the countryside. The first known settlements were recorded in the Doomsday Book as the Knights Templar was situated at the Denny Abby which was located just to the north of a small village. In addition to the abbey, the village that eventually became Waterbeach also featured its own abbey which was located near the present day church in town.

For centuries the small village grew into the town of Waterbeach and when World War II broke out  the Royal Air Force (RAF) established a station just on the northern edge of the town. During the war, the stationed served under the RAF Bomber Command. When the war was concluded, the station fell under the jurisdiction of the RAF Transport Command and then afterwards the RAF Fighter Command until 1966. At that point it transferred to the Royal Engineers and eventually became known as the Waterbeach Barracks. There was a small museum that was built to honor the service of those who served at the location which collected quite a bit of history, but unfortunately the museum has closed.

By 2013, the barracks had closed and now the site is going to be developed to increase the number of houses in the region by upwards of 10,000 units.

Waterbeach Today

Over the past few years there has been a considerable amount of growth thanks in large part to expansion in Cambridge and London which has pushed into the Waterbeach area. The southern sections of the town include an industrial section which is the home to several businesses and the Waterbeach Community Primary School has around 300 students and the building is located next to the town’s lending library.

Waterbeach itself offers several retail shops, a brewery, pubs, a café, good quality butchers and even Chinese food if you are so inclined. There are a number of churches, Salvation Army, community groups such as the Scouts and Girl Guides as well as an active theatre community and community associations as well.
