Glan Conwy’s name translates from Welsh to “Church of St. Ffraid on the bank of the River Conwy.” It has a long history, being settled in the 5th century. According to tradition, the village was founded when St. Bridget (St. Ffraid in Welsh) sailed from Ireland on a green turf and landed on the banks of the River Conwy in the present-day village. Official documents show the Glan Conwy church was erected in the 5th century. Throughout the years other churches were built in the village for the various faiths and denominations, with as many as seven at one time. Currently, only a Baptist and Methodist Church are still open and active.
