Crantock’s history dates back to 460 AD when a small group of Irish hermits founded an oratory on the River Gannel.  The formal village was organized during Norman times when the historic church, St. Carantoc’s Church, was founded in the 14th century. The village was at one time known as Langurroc, which translated to “the dwelling of monks,” and refers to the original church.

There are coastal footpath trails and the many open areas are owned and operated by The National Trust, including West Pentire Headland, a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its diverse amount of rare plants and wildflowers.
