Ballynahinch is a small town in County Down, fifteen miles south of Belfast. It has a leisure centre and hosts a weekly market in the square, first established in the 1600s. At one time nearby Ballynahinch Spa was a popular tourist destination with visitors attracted by the spa wells. The countryside beyond the town is beautiful, with the mountains of Slieve Croob being designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. These are the foothills of the Mourne Mountains and give splendid views.

Ballynahinch flowers can be seen close by at the National Trust property of Rowallane Garden. A visit to this garden offers any plant lover a fantastic experience with its display of shrubs and herbaceous plants, wildflower meadows, bulbs and rock garden plants collected from all corners of the globe. Energetic visitors may enjoy the Woodland Walk or the Farmland Trail. Flower lovers may also enjoy the Hermitage Garden, a fourteen acre organic garden set out in the landscape typical of the area, which is shaped by glacial activity. As well as shrubs and herbaceous flowers, the garden has allotments to enjoy and also a labyrinth, which is a spiral of yew and hornbeam. From the garden there are fantastic views across the countryside.

Between Ballynahinch and Downpatrick lies Loughinisland, home of Annadorn Dolmen. The dolmen is a large flat stone over a chamber and supported by three smaller stones. The site has not been excavated and though there are theories as to the original purpose, these have not been confirmed.

Besides offering walks in the beautiful countryside, up mountains or along rivers and the shore, there are also facilities for golfing enthusiasts and for those who love horse riding and fishing while for those wanting to enjoy facilities of an international city, Belfast is only a short journey away.
