Modern and vibrant, Newry is one of the oldest towns in Northern Ireland, granted city status in 2002. Close to the border with Southern Ireland Newry lies on the banks of the River Clanrye. The river creates the border between County Down and County Armagh. It is believed that Saint Patrick set up a religious foundation here when he planted a yew tree in the 5th Century and it is this Yew tree which gives Newry its name. Huge celebrations take place now on Saint Patrick's Day in March.

Newry is set in beautiful countryside, littered with prehistoric and early Christian sites; the area is steeped in folklore. Newry itself has a long and proud heritage in industry and trade; it first became a port in 1742 and prior to this was a growing market town.

In 1996 Bagenal's Castle was rediscovered in a bakery in Newry. Now restored it serves as a museum and visitors centre. Incredibly the original plans of this building still survive in the National Archives. The other building of note in Newry is the Catholic Cathedral, an imposing structure which is the seat of the Bishop of Dromone.
