The main road leading to Barney, as Barnard Castle is colloquially called, is built based on the roads made by the Romans. Upon reaching the end, you’ll see the ruins of the stone castle, which was built by Bernard de Balliol in 1125, from which the town’s name originated. If you continue further down the main road, following the curve of the castle wall, you’ll chance upon Market Cross, an octagonal building that was built by Thomas Breaks, and given to the town in 1747. It also takes the name Butter Mart, since the floor area is where dairy goods and produce are sold. From here, go down to a street known as The Bank where you will find Blagraves House, which is now used as a restaurant, a top one at that. It is said that Oliver Cromwell, an English military and political leader, dined in the Blagraves House.

Turning left from Market Cross will take you to Newgate, where you will find the world-renowned Bowes Museum. The structure itself is impressive enough, built in the style of a French chateau. Imagine its grounds filled with Barnard Castle flowers and what you get is a picturesque sight to behold. But what really makes Bowes Museum a must-visit is its art collection that is considered the finest in the country. Not just in the county, but the England country. The 18th-century Silver Swan automaton is its most famous exhibit.

Get this, when you visit the castle, you’re actually standing in the ancient capital of Teesdale. After all, it is where the town started and then grew. The land where the castle stands was given by William Rufus to Guy de Baliol about 1093. Baliol came to England together with William I, the Conqueror.
