Flower Delivery to Kelloe with Clare Florist
Kelloe is a small village located in northeast England. It is also a civil parish that belongs to the County Durham. Kelloe is located only few miles south-east of Durham. Those who have visited this village have probably noticed the many structures and items in and around Kelloe that remind people of the Industrial era when quarrying and coal mining were the most important industries in this region. What is interesting is that Kelloe has much richer history that can be traced in the Bronze Age. Only a couple of miles from the last houses of this village, archeologists have found tools from this age – arrowheads used by ancient hunters. It is also worth mentioning that they have also found a Neolithic tool too (a little bit further). There are experts who suggest that the trees from this area were cleared by the Neolithic people in order to create farms.
There are not many records that tell us about this area in the Roman and Anglo-Saxon era. However, many people believe that the name Kelloe derives from an Old English phrase celf-hlaw or calf hill. The village became bigger during the medieval age. This is the period when the first church and water mill were built. As we have mentioned before this area was important in the industrial era because of the coal and quarry reserves. Many people from this area lost their lives during the WWI and WWII. The most famous person born in this village is Elizabeth Barrett Browning – a poet and writer.
