Flower Delivery to Sadberge – A Village in the Borough of Darlington
Situated between Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees, the village of Sadberge is located within the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of County Durham.
The Vikings settled in an area located north of the Tees and it was called the Earldom of Sadberge and it stretched from Hartlepool to Teesdale. The wapentake (capital) of this settlement was the village of Sadberge. All over England, wapentakes were found in areas that were settled by the Danes; its importance as an administrative centre continued on until the medieval times.
Sadberge's name is of Norse origin and it is derived from Setberg which means “flat topped hill.” That description is accurate for the village given it has good views of the countryside around it.
The Earldom of Sadberge was not part of Durham in Norman times. It also wasn't under the rule of the Prince Bishops of Durham. The earldom, instead, formed an outlying part of the county of Northumberland; this was the case because it had been part of the old Kingdom of Northumbria.
King Stephen of England gave Northumberland to Scotland in 1139. The River Tees then became the southern boundary of the kingdom of Scotland. This was the case until Henry II reclaied Northumberland in 1157.
The decline of Sadberge's importance can be attributed to Hugh du Puiset. In 1189, he added the earldom to Durham which of course made Sadberge under the rule of Durham.
