History

Fermanagh was the stronghold of the Maguire Clan. The first chief of the Maguire dynasty was Donn Carrach Maguire. Fermanagh was divided equally to the other five escheated counties among Scottish and English undertakers and native Irish due to the confiscation of lands relating to Hugh Maguire. The baronies of Knockninny and Magherabio were given to Scottish undertakers; Clankelly Magherastephana and Lurg were given to English undertakers; and Clanawley, Coole and Tyrkennedy were given to servitors and slaves. The families of Cole, Blennerhasset, Butler, Hume and Dunbar were the chief families who benefited from the new settlement.

Elizabeth I made Fermanagh into a county, but it wasn't brought under civil government until the Plantation of Ulster.

Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces

Florence Court Garden – This is located in Eniskillen and is a National Trust House that is set amidst a dramatic backdrop of mountains and forests. It offers views, walks, and a charming walled garden where you can see flowers in County Fermanagh.

Tully Castle – This is located in Derrygonnelly. In its history, it was sacked and burned during the mid-1600s. The castle, although in ruins, still maintains ts picturesque state. There is also a 17th century style formal garden that has been recreated since the 1970s.

Castle Archdale Country Park – This features numerous nature trails, Lough slide, woodland walks and cycle trails. Located on the lower shores of the Lough Erne, visitors are treated to a beautiful butterfly garden, wildflower meadow and deer enclosure while in the park. Boats can be hired to explore nearby islands and pony trekking is also available.

Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark – This is centred around the Marble Arch Caves. It became one of the first Geoparks to be designated in Europe in 2001. The park features a variety of sites that demonstrate the geological and wider natural heritage of the area. Not only that, cultural heritage is also on display.
