A taste of history
Wondering why Buxton is dubbed as the spa town? If you think it’s because of the number of spas built in the area, you’re not entirely incorrect. After all, it started out as a settlement developed by Romans, and named as Aquae Arnemetiae or the spa of the goddess of the grove. It has a geothermal spring that is believed to have healing powers, which drew the Victorians to this humble location. The temperature of the water rises at a constant of 280C, and piped to St Ann’s Well, a shrine that was built in honour of the saint with the same name during the medieval times.
It was late 18th century when the Dukes of Devonshire developed Buxton, but it wasn’t until the rule of the 5th Duke that the town developed in the style of Bath. The Duke used the profit from his copper mines to make it into a sophisticated spa town. Its popularity didn’t gain as much grounds, however, until Dr Erasmus Darwin recommended the waters at Buxton to Josiah Westwood. The Wedgewood family was also instrumental for putting this town on the map, as they often visit on a holiday and then recommended it to their friends.
Today, Buxton is one of the most well-known places in Derbyshire and is famous for the Well Dressing event celebrated annually. The event started simple enough and then developed into a town carnival where, apart from the waters, other things are showcased, such as Buxton flowers, local music and other fun activities.
