Cheriton Bishop is a village located in the county of Devon, England. It’s on the northern border of the Dartmoor National Park, and is located between the villages of Exeter and Okehamptom. There were 652 residents listed during the last census in 2011. The history of Cheriton Bishop goes back to nearly one thousand years. The land used to be an important commercial centre for local farmers.

In Old English, the word Cheriton means “church town”. The Church of St. Mary is still standing today. The 13th century old wagon roof chancel still remains. The current church still has many features from its Perpendicular period, a blend of early gothic architecture from the 13th to 16th centuries. The west aisle and northern aisle parts of the church were made of ashlar-granite. There is also a notable Norman font, an old screen, and a pulpit that dates back to the 16th century.

In 1800 the ceiling collapsed over the great stairs and in the ballroom. The rooms were shut up for years, until they were restored in 1910. Recently, a permanent ceiling was added to replace a temporary one from 1960, that had covered the damaged regions. It’s one of the best examples of baroque plasterwork and stucco in the region. The house is open for private tours at specific times of the year.

Present day Cheriton Bishop has a shop, doctor’s surgery, guest house, and a primary school. This town remains a small farming community.

An annual music festival called Gig in the Garden is held to raise funds for local charities. It’s held on the first Saturday in September every year, and attracts many popular bands from England.
