For the hillside just outside of Devonport, Devon , take a moment to drink in the impressive skyline of Devonport, made distinct with the red, blue, and green triple towers. Located in the Southwest, the ocean breezes blow to add to the charm and peace of a worthwhile daytrip destination.
Once know as Plymouth Dock, or simply Dock, Devonport is located in the Plymouth district in the county of Devon. As time passed, the sleepy community began to focus on the sea, but was once a significant settlement thanks in part to the docks themselves. Once part of the Three Towns, along with Plymouth and East Stonehouse, this conservative party stronghold merged in 1914 to become the city of Plymouth.
Robert Waters of Portsmouth was given a contract in 1690 to construct a stone-faced dock at Point Froward along the east bank of the Hamoaze, situated ideally at the mouth of the Tamar river. Construction began in earnest in 1700 and quickly became the central point of a growing settlement. By 1733, the census recorded 3,000 residents, and by 1801 was the largest of the Three Towns. Renamed Devonport in 1823 under King George, the town marked the occasion by erecting a stone column next to the classically designed town hall.

Color blossoms throughout the seasons, with homeowners and shopkeepers tending vibrant displays to attract visitors and floral admirers alike. A visit to the tourism board or to town hall will make available a walking map of the Devonport Heritage Trail, complete with over 70 destinations throughout town including the memorial column, the town hall, and the adjacent Egyptian Revival Library.
Aside from the varied selection of flower displays, Devonport also offers extensive recreation opportunities for visitors as well. The city’s shopping street is alive with unique boutiques and food stalls, and the municipal park is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a picnic with family and friends. The city is also home to The Brickfields, the sports grounds of Plymouth Albion.
