Dowland is one of the civil parishes in North Devon in South West England. It's located in the local government district of Torridge and is situated near the Torridge river.
The History of Dowland
In the 1870s, Dowland was mentioned in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales by John Marius Wilson. He noted that the district was eight miles west of the railway station in Eggesford and five and a half miles north north east of Hatherleigh. He also mentioned that the manor in Dowland belonged to Sir S. H. Northcote, Bart, and that there was an old church with a square tower in the area.
