Flower Delivery to Drewsteignton with Clare Florist
Drewsteignton is a village with a long and rich history. This is one of the rare places in this region that has existed for so many years in continuity. Besides being a village, Drewsteignton is also a civil parish located in the administrative area of West Devon in South West England.
People have lived in this area since the Neolithic period. There is a preserved Neolithic chambered tomb near Spinter’s Rock created around 3.000 BC. There is also an Iron Age hill fort (known as Prestonbury Castle among the locals). Drewsteignton was first mentioned in a written source in 1086 in the Domesday Book. It is interesting to mention that back in these days this village was known as Taintone (a village beside the Teign). In the 13th century this place was known as Teyngton Drue. Some local people suggest that the current name of this village is influenced by the presence of druids in this area, but the truth is that until now there is no solid evidence for this claim. While we are discussing the history of Drewsteignton it is good to point out that there was one person that left strong influence on this village and the region – a local landowner known as Drogo.
The church of Holy Trinity is one of the oldest buildings in Drewsteignton. It was completed in the 15th century, but there were several renovations later. The church is located in the village’s square. The church and the square are part of a conservation (protected) area since 1972.
Another significant attraction in this area is Castle Drogo. Although this castle is not in the center of the village, you can get there after a few minute walk in the beautiful nature around Drewsteignton. The castle was finished in 1930 after 19 years. Caste Drogo was built for Julius Drewe descendent of the previously mentioned landowner Drogo. This is the last castle to be built in England and it is currently being reconstructed.
Dartmoor National Park is another attraction in this area. Drewsteignton actually lies within the Dartmoor National Park. This park covers an area of 368 square miles and it got this status in 1951. This moorland is home to many mammals like Dartmoor ponies, foxes, rabbits, weasels, deer and hares. There are also few species of reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish that live here.
Besides visiting the attractions we’ve mentioned before, people usually enjoy having long walks in the Teign Valley and taking pictures of the incredible nature around Drewsteignton.
If you are living or visiting Drewsteignton or you have a person that is close to you living there and you want to surprise that person, why not send flowers? Clare Florist offer many different kinds of affordable, pretty bouquets. So, if you want to send flowers to Drewsteignton then look no further.
