Flower Delivery to Dorset with Clare Florist

The hamlet of Briantspuddle is located in the valley of the North River at about a distance of thirteen kilometres away, in the county of Dorset. It comes under the regulation of Purbeck, a shire district in Dorset. The village was named after Brian de Turberville, who was the lord of the manor during the reign of Edward the Third. Briantspuddle is among one of the buildings that has been listed within the Piddle Valley Conservation.

Briantspuddle has a rich history. The earliest reference of the village can be found in an assessment of land tax called the Geld in the year 1083. At that time, this rural community was called Pidele and was governed by a minister named Godric. Then three years later, it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as being a wealthy land that was worth four pounds under the priest Godric. It was again renamed as Priestpidele in the thirteenth century probably because it was under the priest Godric. But by the fourteenth century, it was owned by a number of families who finally had to let it go as poverty and impoverishment took over.

Forced to sell their property in the year 1914, the village then came under Sir Ernest Debenham who had plans for the village. Once consisting of about twelve houses, he wanted it to become a successful agricultural community which led to him adding about forty more houses. But work was put off as World War I broke out.
Now known as the Bladen Farms, Debenham wanted more people living on the land so that they could increase their produce that was all grown locally. This was a modern model that also aimed at helping the farms in the neighbourhood nearby.

Landmarks of Briantspuddle, Dorchester

The Village Hall

The Village Hall was initially a barn that was a part of the Briantspuddle Farm No.26 that has seen a multitude of alterations to it. In 1803, James Frampton took the responsibility of reconstructing it, and then after Debenham purchased it, he converted it to a more modern building and finally in 1953, it was purchased by the Parish Council.

The Cruck Cottage

The most historic landmark that you will find in the entire rural community of Briantspuddle is the Cruck Cottage.  It is believed to be built somewhere in the beginning or late fifteenth century and its name has been derived from the Cruck that was originally used in its architecture.

The Madonna and the Child War Memorial

Ernest Debenham commissioned the architect Eric Gill to fashion the Madonna and the Child for a War Memorial on site in Briantspuddle. There is also an inscription by a 15th century spiritualist known as Julian of Norwich.
