Kimmeridge is a very small village located in Dorset – a famous English county. Kimmeridge is one of the southernmost points in Dorset situated on the English Channel coast. This is also a civil parish. Kimmeridge is close to the historic market town of Wareham and the coastal town of Swanage. It is part of the Purbeck administrative district and it is interesting to mention that the Isle of Purbeck is just one kilometer south of Kimmeridge. According to the last census, the population of this village was 90.

Kimmeridge is known for the interesting formations like cliffs and other similar landforms and some of them date back to the Jurassic age. These cliffs were so interesting that they served as inspiration for the famous English writer P.D. James for her novel called The Black Tower.

Because of the access to shale, this area was populated for at least 2000 years. Romans have used the local shale mine to produce pitch and dyes. There was an Oil Shale Workshop in the Roman period just few miles from Kimmeridge.  

The rest of the history of this village is not much different than the history and progress of the neighboring villages. The fact is that this village, mostly because of its specific location, never grew into a bigger village.

Kimmeridge is located about 125 miles southwest of London. It will take about 3 hours and 30 minutes to get there from London with a car using the M3 road. The closest railway station is located in Wareham. There is a bus line that connects Wareham with Kimmeridge.

Kimmeridge or Clavell tower

Clavell Tower is situated right above the Hen Cliff. It is about 35 feet tall and rises more than 300 feet above the English Channel. It was built in the beginning of the 19th century as part of the Smedmore estate. The tower was in a very bad shape, but it was reconstructed few years ago by the Landmark Trust.

Kimmeridge Oil Field

Kimmeridge is the home of one of the oldest working oil pumps in the United Kingdom that works since 1961. This village is known for oil production since the early 20th century.

Surfing

Although Kimmeridge Bay might not be the best place for surfing in the UK, local surfers are frequently using this place. It is especially popular among beginner surfers. It is ideal for right-handers because of the specific places where the waves are breaking.

Camping

Kimmeridge is also very popular among campers because of the beautiful nature around it. Needless to say, people interested in geology love this place.
