Over Compton is a small village and civil parish located in the north part of Dorset, England. It has a population of 183. This village is located very close to Yeovil (just 2 miles east from this famous town. Over Compton is also very close the county border with Somerset.

According to some source the name of this village comes from two Anglo-Saxon words – cum and ton. The first one was usually used for description of narrow valleys or comb while the latter is a well-known term for settlements. Over Compton is situated in the Yeo Valley. What is interesting about this place is that it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. In this medieval book, Compton was described as a wealthy agricultural settlement, but the description lacks precise location of this place at that time. Starting from the 12th century, Compton was separated into two villages – Nether and Over Compton. It is obvious that Over Compton is located above nether Compton.

Another important year for this area was 1736 when the famous Goodden family got the manor of Over Compton and this family has significantly affected the history of this area. It is also good to point out that both Over Compton and Nether Compton were known for the residents who were devoted Protestants. There are several churches and chapels in this area.

St. Michael’s Church

St’ Michael’s Church is located right next to Compton House. One of the first things that visitors notice is the amazing and rare Perpendicular west tower. The interior is filled with hatchments, memorials and two-decker pulpit. This church is situated very close to Nether Compton. It also features four very old bells. The oldest one is from the 16th century.

St. Nicholas’ Church, Nether Compton

Although this church is not located in Over Compton, you can reach it on foot after a 20 minute walk. This is a quite larger church and it was built in the 13th century. It has five bells (the oldest one date back to the 15th century). The unique carved stone screen is probably the most interesting part of this church.

Compton House

This house was once the home of the famous Goodden family. It is open for the public in the summer when people can see an original display of butterflies. There are collections of butterflies from different parts of the world. Visitors can also see the so-called Lullingstone Silk Farm a place where silk for Royal events was once produced.
