Flower Delivery to Silton with Clare Florist
The small village of Silton is located in the northern region of Dorset County, which is in England. Silton lies within the valleys of the Blackmore Vale. The town of Gillingham is about four miles southeast of the village. According to a 2011 census, Silton had a total population of 120 people with only 56 households. This averages out to 2-3 people per household. Most of these people are either retired or they commute to nearby towns for work. Silton is not exactly a booming tourist attraction. It gets a few tourists every so often, but tourism is not the main economic component of the village. Silton is a civil parish and takes Christianity very seriously. The Parish Church of St Nicholas is the most notable church in the village. It was built sometime during the 15th century and it still remains standing to this day. If you are a tourist going through Silton then you will definitely appreciate the historical significance of this structure.
In the year 1086, the Domesday Book featured a record of Silton. The village was recorded under the name “Seltone.” The Domesday Book was a manuscript referred to as the “Great Survey.” King William the Conqueror had ordered his people to survey the lands throughout England and certain parts of Wales. Silton, or Seltone, was fortunate to get discovered and recorded. At that time, the village only had 16 households on 28 acres of land. The first settlement in the village was near the future site of the church, which is on a low ridge close to the River Stour. Not much is known about the village after 1086. Historical records do show that Sir Hugh Wyndham lived in Silton for many years during his life from 1602 to 1684. Wyndham was a famous Baron of the Exchequer and Judge of the Common Pleas during the late 1600s in London. A sculptor by the name of Jan Van Nost designed a memorial for Wyndham inside the Parish Church of St Nicholas.
