Flower Delivery to Dunragit with Clare Florist
Located on the A75 between Stranraer and Glenluce, Dunragit is situated within the parish of Old Luce in the traditional county of Wigtownshire. It is located in the south-west of England and the modern village grew up around the west gate of Dunragit House, which is an 18th-century country house. There is also evidence of a Neolithic settlement in the area.
The name Dunragit is said to be derived from Din Rheged which means “Fort of Rheged” and refers to the Brythonic kingdom of Rheged which existed in the northern part of Britain between the 5th and 8th centuries.
It's also possible that Dunragit was one of the royal sites used by the kings of Rheged. It was also suggested that it was the site of King Arthur's northern court, Pen Rhionydd, which is recorded in the medieval Welsh Triads.
Archaeological excavations in the area between 1999 and 2002 unveiled complex Neolithic monuments. Although nothing can be seen above ground, aerial photographs show an early Neolithic cursus monument, as well as remains of three later Neolithic concentric timbre circles which date to around 2,500 BC.
Dunragit House – a short walk from the main highway along a narrow paved road.
Glenwhan Gardens – features lots of Dunragit flowers and is located just a few feet from the Dunragit House. The gardens featuring flowers in Dunragit is very well maintained and beautifully planted. An admission fee is required to view the place and the gardens are quite large as well.
Ruins of Glen Luce Abbey – located about two miles away and built during the early Christian era in Scotland. It was once a very impressive structure but it fell into disuse and was largely destroyed by the time of the Reformation.
Castle Kennedy – located about three miles west and is in ruins.
Lochinch Castle – the replacement castle for Castle Kennedy and still exists to this day. It is currently occupied and the distance between the two castles is about a half-mile walk.
If you want to explore these wonderful sites, you might want to consider staying at an accommodation nearby. This way, you can rest and recuperate before proceeding with the rest of your journey. Also, if you want to make it a romantic occasion when with a date, don't forget to send flowers to Dunragit to surprise your date!
Another benefit of staying over for a couple of days is to see other nearby attractions. Here are a few worth visiting:
Castle of St John, Stranraer – a medieval tower house built by Ninian Adair of Kilhurst – one of the most powerful Lairds of Wigtownshire – in 1500. Here, you can view videos and reconstructions so you know the story of the medieval landowners who built and lived in the castle.
Stranraer Museum – located inside Stanraer's historic Old Town Hall. Here, you get to know the story of Wigtonshire through the years.
Kirkmadrine Early Christian Stones – eight sculpted stones that confirm the existence of an important early Christian church at Kirkmadrine.
Ardwell House Gardens – surround the 18th-century Ardwell House. Daffodils, rhododendrons, flowering shrubs and rock plants are just few of the many that make the area look really beautiful.
Ruins of Chapel Finian – sit on the inland side of the main road running along the shore of Luce Bay about five miles north-west of Port William.
Laggangairn Standing Stones – they served as markers in a desolate moor for over thousands of years. It's not clear who raised them and why.
