Flower Delivery to Portpatrick with Clare Florist
Portpatrick is a village located in the Dumfries and Galloway portion of Scotland. This little town is laid out over a quaint hamlet, located on the west coast of Rhins of Galloway. There’s plenty of green fields here, and is a lovely area to visit for fresh air, and to experience the great outdoors. This town has some great features, so when visiting you’ll want to plan on spending a few days to explore the region.
Portpartrick has an interesting ancient history. It was originally called Portrie, or Port Rhin, and its port was protected by Dunskey Castle. The baron and his followers protected the region. During invasion the villagers would escape up into the hills for safety. This castle was built over 700 years ago, and is situated on a cliff. The castle region offers spectacular views. Cliff top walks and beaches will keep the traveller occupied for the day. The coastline at Portpatrick has a pleasant climate, so subtropical plant life grows well here, and is a paradise for gardeners.
For those who tire of the coastline, there’s also a mini putting course to practice your swing. Clubs such as golf and bowling will keep the family occupied. Portpatrick has an active tourism industry. There are plenty of pubs to grab a pint and a bite to eat, and guesthouses and hotels to stay at overnight. Life Boat Week is a yearly annual festival, with many activities to enjoy throughout the week. Fireworks displays are held most nights, and parades during the day.
Portpatrick’s main commerce is derived from fishing. In 1770 this town attempted to protect it from gales by making breakwaters in the harbour. They eventually broke apart, and more efforts were made, but the project never seemed to get off the ground. In 1863 a new breakwater was completed, but not before the town lost its mail service station. Today the harbour still has a fishing fleet.
Other sights to see around Portpatrick include St. Patrick’s church, from 1629. It’s believed that it was built on another church from the past. Its unusual lighthouse shape may either have been inspired by Irish architecture, or it was actually a lighthouse at some point in the past. In the past many visitors came to be wedded here, before taking the boat back out again. Have a stroll around and see the graveyard. If you look closely, you’ll find it full of memorials to shipwreck victims.
There used to be railway service to the town in 1861, but sadly the train station was shut down in 1950.
