One hald mile away from the village is the Elphinstone Tower, which was built during the 13th-15th century. It is a 5-storey high tower, but it is now a ruin, with just its lower level retaining. The Elphinstone Tower farm generates cereal crops. The history of Elphinstone started from the Elphsitone clan which primarily held its lands in Lothian. It was first ruled by its Lord in the name of Sir Alexander Seton who died ca. 1290.
The village has basic amenities but today’s population in the place is declining for no apparent reason. A typical myth about Meg—a witch—is said to be the basis of the village’s name. According to the myth, Meg had maids who were elves and that she was spiteful to them. One day, Meg went to the blaze in between Ormiston and Elphinstone where she ate in her wagon and summoned her maids to not disturb her. While Meg was asleep, one elf got into her wagon and stole her leftovers. Unfortunately, Meg awoke and captured the elf. Meg took the elf back to Elphinstone and jailed him in her stone or the ‘Meg’s chuck’. Therefore, the name ‘Elphinstone’ came from the elf in stone.
