Prestonpans is a small town located a short distance east of Edinburgh in the East Lothian region of Scotland. It has a rich and fascinating history, the memory of which is abundant throughout the town, nowhere more so than on the numerous murals that bedeck many walls, earning Prestonpans the title, 'Scotland's Mural Town.' The town has a history dating back to the 11th Century and, although there are myths about it being founded by a shipwreck survivor named Althamer, the truth is probably more closely linked to the monks of Newbattle and Holyrood who arrived in 1184 and developed the town of Prieston. Its location on the coast meant that one of the primary industries for these early monks was the collection of salt in pans, leading to the eventual name change to Prestonpans.

The main aspect of Prestonpans' history is the important battle that took place there (and now bears the town's name) during the second Jacobite Rising in 1745. It was the first significant clash of forces during that rebellion and saw Jacobites loyal to the Stuarts secure a victory over the Hanoverian forces, a victory that has since become heavily mythologised and committed to legend. The battle is today commemorated by a pair of memorials on or near the field where it took place.

Modern Prestonpans has been awarded a Fairtrade Town status and is marked by a number of features that attract visitors, including the so-called Murals Trail and the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, the sixth-oldest golf club in the world. It is well connected to Edinburgh and Berwick via its modest train station and its proximity to the A1 means that getting next day delivery flowers in Prestonpans is a smooth and easy process.
