Flower Delivery to Balerno, Edinburgh with Clare Florist
Located just 7 miles from the city center, Balerno is a small village suburb of Edinburgh in Scotland. Because Balerno, Edinburgh is located right just North and Northeast of the Pentland Hills, the village has a very rural feel despite it being so close to the A70 road and the modern developments around Currie and Juniper Green.
History of Balerno, Edinburgh
Balerno comes from the old Gaelic Baile Airneach which means Hawthorn Farm or Land of the Hawthorns. The name became modified by the early 1200s as settlers began to enter the area and shortened the name to Balhernoch. By the 1750s a few mills had been created and 500 people lived in the town and it became known as Balerno. Over the next 150 years reservoirs were added (one of which sits just 1 mile south of the city) and in 1874 a railway was connected to the city.
Despite the railway’s closing to passengers in 1943 (and to freight trains in 1967) the population of the town had reached 1,500 by 1950. In the last 50 years the population has soared and according to the 2001 census over 6,000 residents lived in the suburb. The area has become a popular destination for those looking to enjoy the charm, Balerno flowers, and rural setting that the area has despite its proximity to a large city.
One of the main attractions of Balerno, Edinburgh is the Malleny House & Gardens. While the Malleny House itself is closed to the public, visitors can stroll through the 12,000 sq. m garden and view all of the beautiful flowers in Balerno, Edinburgh. In addition to showcasing Balerno flowers, the garden is home to four 100-year-old yew trees that are known as the Four Apostles.
Balerno Famers’ Market
Every second Saturday of each month the Balerno Farmers’ Market takes place on Main Street. Ran by the Balerno Village Trust, the market features stalls from residents all over the city. You can purchase fresh, local, seasonal fruits and vegetables and some people even send flowers to Balerno to be sold as bouquets at the market.
Red Moss Reserve of Balerno
On the edge of the Pentland Hills just two miles south of Balerno is the only Red Moss Reserve in the Edinburgh area. When visiting these peat lands you can view unique flowers in Balerno including the round-leaved Sundew, cross-leaved Heath, and the wildflower Heather.
