The village of Woodham Walter is located in Essex County, England. The town of Maldon is just three miles east of Woodham Walter. Both towns reside under the Maldon local government district. This is an old English word that means “the village in the wood.” According to old UK English, wudu means wood and ham means home. The village ended up changing its name in honour of the Woodham Walter Hall, which was a moated country house in the village that eventually got demolished during the 17th century. Later on in 1991, three bronze and gold torcs were found at the village’s Oak Farm. These date back to the year 1000 B.C. Of course, these discoveries don’t prove the village actually existed back then. It just proves that people were travelling on the land or possibly settled there. In the Domesday Book from 1086, it stated the population of Woodham Walter was 18 people. Today there are a little less than 1200 people there. They mostly commute to nearby towns and cities for work. Either that or they have retired in the village to enjoy the latter part of their years in peace.
