Coaltown of Balgonie is a former mining and weaving village located in south central Fife and to the south east of Glenrothes. The village received its name from the Balgonie Castle in Fife County, Scotland. In 1883, a post office was established in the area and a school built in 1891. There is a pub, a village hall and bowling green as well. At the west end of the village is an industrial estate and business park at its west end, named Eastfield.

Balgonie is about 30 Kilometers east of Regina and is at the intersection of 4 major highways. Although the town’s population reduced drastically in the 1930’s and the 1940’s, but with the coming of the Trans Canada Highway in the late 1950’s, the town has grown steadily over the years and seen an overwhelming increase in residents as well as businesses. Balgonie’s population at the 2011 census was 1625, from 1384 in 2006 and 588 in the 1960’s. The population has continued climbing ever since.

Balgonie has a rich history within the Canadian landscape. It was here the first Canadian built airplane was made by one of the town’s famous residents William Wallace Gibson who flew his plane off the Hyde Block building over the town in 1910. He was the subject of a short clay animation video “The Birdman of Balgonie” in 1991 by Brian Duchscherer and sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada.

Balgonie Castle - The town of Balgonie got its name from this castle which dates from the 14th century. It was given to it by the Countess of Stathmore in 1882. The castle is located in the outskirts of Glenrothes and midway between Milton of Balgonie and Coaltown of Balgonie. The castle was inhabited by the Sibbald family in 1246. It was believed the tower was built by the treasurer of King David II, Sir Thomas Sibbald in 1360. The castle is one of the finest examples of the oldest complete castles in Scotland. The castle is open to the public and has had numerous visitors over the years but now is home to Raymond Morris of Eddergoll and his family and is being used for weddings, anniversaries and other functions, although parts of the castle are roofless ruins. There have been reports of ghosts seen in the castle and there is a belief by some people that it is haunted.

Rothes Halls

This is a well equipped conference and entertainment centre in the centre of Glenrothes open all year round. There are a host of fun activities at the Rothes Hall, some of which include stand-up comedy, theatre, dance and children’s shows. On the first floor is a visual art gallery that hosts new exhibitions, displaying works of various local and national artists. It is also one of the areas popular conference venues, with great facilities that are available for hire.

Children's Gala

The Gala is a well known traditional event rooted in the generosity of the mining community where people save from their hard earned meager pay to fund a celebration of youth and togetherness yearly with a family day out. The event will hold later in the year and will feature local children getting blue wristbands and a free goody bag as well as enter freely into the attractions. Children from outside the village will however pay a small gain to gain entrance into the attractions.

Glenrothes Accordion and Fiddle Club

Members, guests and visitors get to enjoy great monthly performances at different levels as well as a special guest performance. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own instrument and join in the fun. Entrance fees will be paid at the door except on December 17th which is a ticket free event.
