Flower Delivery to Culross with Clare Florist
Culross is a small village located in Scotland, on the southern-central portion of the right coast, in the council area of Fife. It used to be a royal burgh. The last census count was in 2006, and listed over 395 residents. It’s believed that the village was founded by Saint Serf during the 6th century. He was a saint of Scotland who lived until 583 AD. In the past, Culross used to be a port city for the Firth of Forth, or the estuary to the River Forth. Much of the harbour was filled in to allow the building of the coast railway line, but there are still regions where you can see the original harbour wall.
The village has some turbulent Scottish legends. One says that Princess and Saint Teneu became pregnant before marriage, and her family tossed her off a cliff. Somehow she survived, and an empty boat floated beside her. She hopped into the boat, which took her to Culross. Saint Serf took her in, and became the foster father of her son, who was named Saint Kentigern or Mungo. Mungo died in 612 AD, being the founder of Glasgow, but it’s uncertain how much of the rest of the legend is true.
Like many other villages of the time, Culross had a thriving coal mining industry in the 16th and 17th centuries. They built the first coal mine which extended under the sea. The mine utilized the best technology of the time with drain pipes. The mine was eventually destroyed in a storm in 1625.
Culross Palace was built by Sir George Bruce of Carnock in the 16th century. This building is made from a dark yellow stone and has a cross-step gabled design that still stands today. There is a monument for his family standing in the transept of the Abbey Church.
Parts of the Abbey Church still remain today, and like many other heritage buildings are protected by the National Trust for Scotland. This church was founded in 1217, and the tower, transepts and choir are still used for services. There are other buildings in ruins no longer in use, but still in the care of the Trust.
Elizabeth Melville was Lady Culross and she was the first female writer in Scotland to have her poetry published. She lived from 1578 to 1640.
The stunning coastline of Culross has been used for many television series and films. Most recently it has been used to film the Outlander series, and for filming the Captain America: The First Avenger movie.
Once a year is the Culross Festival, which focusses on art, comedy, music, and theatre. Many notable performers have the chance to perform on stage in the summer.
