A suburb of Glasgow, Hillington is a residential area that has a long and interesting history. During the lead up to the Second World War, the British government began looking for ways to expand the air force. They would need a large number of new planes in order to be able to keep up with the Luftwaffe. Hillington was the ideal place for just such a factory, with a large residential area that could accommodate the workers and easy access to Glasgow by train. The factory was opened in 1937 and by 1943, the factory was producing more than four hundred engines every week.

After the war ended, the factory was taken over by Rolls-Royce. It was initially used for repairing plane engines and making spare parts. Over the next fifty years, it would produce a variety of different parts, until it would be shut down in 2005. It was one of the most prolific producers of engines during wartime, but production eventually began to be moved to a facility that was closer to the airport in Glasgow.

Despite the closure of the factory, Hillington has continued to thrive, as a residential suburb that feeds into Glasgow.
