History

The first record of Wotton-under-Edge appears in an Anglo-Saxon Royal Charter of King Edmund I who leased four hides of land in Wudentun to Eadric in AD 940.

The meaning of Wudentun is the enclosure, homestead or village (tun) in or near the wood (wude). The “Edge” refers to the limestone escarpment of the Cotswold Edge.

In 1139, Kingswood Abbey was founded, but all that remains is a 16th-century Cistercian gatehouse.

The oldest and largest church in town is St Mary the Virgin, which was consecrated in 1283.

In 1384, the Katharine Lady Berkeley's Grammar School was established. Now, it's a comprehensive called Katharine Lady Berkeley's School. In 1835, the British School was established in town.

In 1810, New Mills was founded and prospered by supplying both parties fighting the Napoleonic Wars. After years of decline, it was acquired by Renishaw plc.

Attractions

St Mary the Virgin Parish Church – the most important architectural structure in town. It features a 14th-century tower and is framed by trees.

Almshouses – there are three groups of these which are still in use today.

Tolsey House – located in the corner of High Street and Market Street. The building is well known for its Victoria Jubilee clock.

Town Hall – sits in Market Street and opposite the Star Inn, which is one of the oldest inns in town.

Walks

There are lots of lovely walks in and around Wotton-under-Edge. There are paths that take you to see many lovely flowers in Wotton-under-Edge, especially during the spring.
