Flower Delivery to Brixton with Clare Florist

Brixton is a district in South London that has garnered much attention for being known as the most colourful, trendy and diverse part of London. It is one of London’s 35 major centres and as such, is packed with appealing bars, exotic markets, flashy art galleries and far-fetched music venues. While it is prominent market sector, Brixton is still mainly a residential multiethnic community with inhabitants mostly of Caribbean and African descent.

History

Before the opening of the Vauxhall Bridge in 1816, Brixton was mostly comprised of farmlands. But as transportation improved to and from central London, Victorian houses started springing up along its main roads, drawing more people into the area. By 1889, the district was finally recognised as part of the London County and soon became South London’s shopping capital.

Severe housing crisis emerged all through the Brixton area after WWII and this led to its urban decay. Around 1940, however, waves of Caribbean immigrants started settling around the district. Racial tension was inevitable and did emerge. But through the years, this was eventually smoothed out, leading Brixton to become the welcoming and lively place it is now.

Attractions

Serious night owls are definitely going to enjoy Brixton. It not only boasts fantastic clubbing, but also a vivacious music scene with bars opening until 2 in the morning. Venues such as the Fridge, The Windmill Pub and the Brixton Academy are other popular go-to spots of tourists.

The Brixton Village Market

Another interesting spot flocked into by budget eaters in the Brixton district is the Village Market. What makes the place fascinating is that it was once a run-down arcade but has now become home to a variety of cafes and restaurants.

Through the years, the Village Market has become Brixton’s main culinary and cultural hub. It not only offers wide selections of international cuisine, but also features numerous stalls filled with colourful fruits, meat, veggies and beautiful Brixton flowers. If the task of sending flowers to Brixton comes up, there are always online shops at the ready though.

198 Gallery

Located in 198 Railton Road is a small art installation called the 198 Gallery. It was established way back 1988 to support black artists and their exemplary works of art. It perfectly met their needs by providing them exhibition space where they can display their diverse cultural works.

Parks and Gardens

People who wish to escape the busy district’s hustle and bustle usually head out to the Brockwell Park. Here lies a huge hilly green space with an exquisitely walled garden where people can get a glimpse of spectacular plants and flowers in Brixton. Somewhere in the Brockwell Park is the Brockwell Hall, a Georgian country house built sometime 1811 for the wealthy glass maker, John Blades.

Another notable garden in Brixton is the Windmill Gardens where the only surviving windmill in Brixton can be found. Built in 1816, it was originally coated with tar as protection against bad weather, hence its black colour.

Also known as the Brixton Beach, the Stockwell Skate Park caters to youth with interest in street skating. It was originally constructed in 1970 and has since been improved to support young skaters and their love for the craft.

Brixton may have had a whirlwind of rough times with its edgy history, but if not for these rough times, it would not have become the fascinating, culturally-diverse district it is now. Gone are the days of riots and rebels and upfront racial issues. Today, Brixton is all about parties and juice bars and yes, very delicious tapas.
