Flower Delivery to Docklands by Clare Florist
The Docklands in London is another name for the east and southeast area in London. The docklands were at one time part of the Port of London, which used to be the worlds largest port however now they have been redeveloped for residential and private commercial use.
Back in medieval and Roman times ships would dock at quays in London and Southwark, but as there was no protection and the ships were exposed the Howland Great Dock in Rotherhithe was built in 1696 to help prevent thieves from stealing from the ships. The success of this led to the shelter for 120 large ships, leading to the expansion of the docks during the Georgian and Victorian eras.
During the second world war the London Docklands were hit by over 2,500 bombs which led to significant redevelopments during the 50's. Between the 1960s and the 1970s the development ended as the docks were unable to accommodate larger vessels needed for cargo transportation, resulting in the closure of all London docks between 1960 to 1980. This left 8 square miles of land left empty in east London, resulting in poverty and social problems.
It took around a decade for plans to redevelop the docklands to take effect, and during the 1980s and 1990s a large part of the area was converted into residential and commercial space, including the Canary Wharf. Now the docklands has become a major place to live with a busy business centre. Transport to the area has vastly improved over the years and surrounding areas such as Greenwich and Deptford are being redeveloped.
