Near Charing Cross is Downe, a small village in Greater London. Until 1965, this village was actually part of Kent, instead of Greater London, but after the Orpington Urban District Council was combined with the London Borough of Bromley, Downe went along, too. Until the mid 1800s, Downe was known only as Down. The name was officially changed sometime after 1840. When Charles Darwin, arguably the village’s most famous resident, moved there in 1842, the village was called Down. When he died there in 1882, it was called Downe.
Darwin spent many years exploring the lush natural areas that surround the village, including Downe Bank, which is now a reserve and a Scientific site. Down House, where Darwin lived during much of his time in Downe, was recently nominated to become a World Heritage Site.
One of the most famous landmarks is Buckston Browne Farm. This area was a surgery and research clinic until the 1980s, when the practice of using vivisection was called into question and activists raided the surgery. Since that time, the Browne Farm has been divided into four separate houses.
