On 1 May 1602, Elizabeth I was said to have picknicked with Sir Richard Bulkeley of Beaumaris by an oak tree located on the summit of a hill in the Lewisham area. The said tree came to be known as the Oak of Honor, and today an oak still stands surrounded by railings but this was planted in 1905 as a successor to the original. That oak is the central feature of the landscape of Honor Oak, and it's also part of One Tree Hill.

History

One Tree Hill, which forms the central feature of Honor Oak's landscape, is believed to have been the site where Queen Boudica's final defeat by the Romans happened in AD61. It was supposed to become part of a golf club in 1896 but protests made the plans fall through. The Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell later bought the land and by 1905 it was made into a public open space.

Located in the London Borough of Southwark, the hill is steep and is wooded with open grassland at the top. There are many ancient trees in the area, particularly black poplar and London plane.
