The Mile End Road is located within the district of Mile End in the east end, less than 4 miles from central London. The area of Mile End was first recorded in 1288, while the road itself is an ancient route that runs from London to the east of the city. Mile End Green runs alongside Mile End Road and was historically somewhere Londoners used to gather, giving it the name Assembly Passage. This area was included in the Stepney Green Conservation Area which was designated in the early 1970s and which is of local interest and importance.

The area of Mile End is home to Queen Mary, University of London as well as parts of the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Barts. To the south of Mile End Road, opposite the western edge of Mile End Park is the Ragged School Museum, which is located in buildings which formerly housed a Dr Barnados Ragged School. The area of Mile End is also home to the 'Green Bridge' which allows Mile End Park to cross over the Mile End Road. The bridge includes water features and a garden and has retail and restaurant space below.

The area surrounding Mile End also has much to offer. Not far from Mile End, just off Hackney Road is Columbia Road Flower Market which is open every Sunday.
