For those who have never been, Shoreditch is an inner city district in the historic East End of London.  It’s located nearly immediately north of the City of London.  Shoreditch’s name is surrounded by a great deal of debate, though one interesting legend tells the tale of the name coming from Jane Shore, who was a mistress of Edward IV.  Supposedly, she died or was buried in a ditch in the area.  Today, you can visit a large painting in the Haggerston Branch Library of Jane Shore being taken from the ditch as a nod to the old legend.  

There’s a lot of history to be found in Shoreditch, as well as a lot of beauty.  For example, some of the roads, including the east-west course of Old Street-Hackney Road dates back to the Roman era and was most like originally a Roman road.  In addition, the Shoreditch Church is one of ancient origin as well, and makes an appearance in the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons.  Finally, and likely the most exciting of the places in Shoreditch, is “The Theatre,” which was the first playhouse built in England.  It was built by James Burbage in 1576 and was home to many of Shakespeare’s plays including Romeo and Juliet.  What would be more lovely than to visit the plaque commemorating this great playhouse with flowers to the actors who found their muse here.
