Located in south London and bordered by the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Croxted Road and South Croxted Road, West Dulwich is a proud suburb of one of the largest cities in the world. The borough itself dates back to the 17th century when it was called Dulwich Common. At that time, the land was purchased by the estate of Edward Alleyn and actually drained because it was often flooded.
The earliest records of anything to do with West Dulwich started in 967AD when Edgar the Peaceful granted the property to Earl Aelfheah. At the time it was called Dilwihs which means “meadow where the dill grew”.
Over the centuries, the area became the property of succeeding kings who sold or gave the land to various entities. It wasn’t until 1629 when Dulwich College was formed did the area become used as before it was mostly flooded plains. The famed Beauberry House was built in 1785 and by 1812 the Kingswood House was constructed. During this time the population grew steadily and by the turn of the 20th century Dulwich became part of the Camberwell.
