Lying on the north bank of the River Tame, Ashton-under-Lyne is set upon undulating land at the foothills of the Pennies. The town, which is shortened to Ashton, is located 6.2 miles east of the city centre of Manchester.

History

Ashton Moss, which is a 107 hectare peat bog, is where evidence of prehistoric activity was uncovered. It is only one of the 22 Mesolithic sites not located in the hilly uplands in Tameside.

Before the Norman Conquest of 1066, there was a settlement at Ashton. It was a small hillock on the north bank of the River Tame. To the north side of this, a village was developed which is where St Michael's Square is today.

Ashton developed into a small market town over the centuries. Wool spinning was a traditional industry in the surrounding hilly areas which were ideal for rearing sheep. Coal mining also took place nearby.

The arrival of canals and railways signalled a major turning point for the town. Ashton became a new junction for three canals: Manchester and Ashton, Huddersfield Narrow and Peak Forest.

The Victorian period saw rapid expansion seen in the many rows or red-bricked terraced houses that were built to accommodate the arrival of workers for the cotton mills.

The town also developed into a thriving engineering industry which included computer technology.

Portland Basin Museum – This is situated within the Ashton Canal Warehouse and combines a lovely interior along with a peaceful canal side setting. There are two levels with the lower being displays about the production of goods in Tameside. The museum also features displays and models of how transportation developed in the area.

Ashton Town Hall – This is the first purpose-built town hall in Tameside that dates back to 1840. The structure bears classical features like Corinthian columns on the entrance facade.

Hartshead Pike – This is a stone tower on top of Hartshead Hill that overlooks Ashton and Oldham.
