HISTORY

The name Timperley is derived from Timber Leah with Leah being an Anglo-Saxon word for “clearing in the forest.” History indicates that Timperley was settled as far back as the 7th and 8th centuries. The village in those days was mostly agricultural in nature, especially prior to the Industrial Revolution. The focus of the land was mainly on arable crops.

The Bridgewater Canal branch from Stretford to Runcorn was built through town, and opened in 1776. The construction enhanced transport in the area and encouraged the development of market gardening to serve the growing city of Manchester.

The mid-19th century saw the construction of four railways in Timperley. Because of the arrival of the railways, the middle classes from the centre of Manchester came to town. As such, there was an increase of domestic services in the village during the time.

The Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway or MSJAR which was one of the four railways constructed during the mid-19th century was electrified in 1931. It was one of the first railway lines in Britain to use supply by overhead cables. By 1992, the station was converted to be part of Manchester Metrolink in 1992.

Today, Timperley is mostly a suburban area. A lot of the housing in the area dates back to the 1930s and later. The houses here are larger than traditional “northern terraces” too. Also, the older properties are usually red brick cottages in the style of north Cheshire.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS

Timperley Country Fair – held every September, usually on the second Saturday, on the open ground of Lark Hill by Thorley Lane. A variety of art, craft and charity stalls are put up during this event. There might even be some display of flowers in Timperley on this day.
