Flower Delivery Walmersley – A Suburban Village in Bury
What used to be a rural village in the wild has now become a suburban area in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester. Most of the houses in Walmersley today are of post-war construction, although there are still old stone cottages that remained.
The village is linked with Bury to the south by the Walmersley Road (A56), and with Edenfield, Ramsbottom and Shuttleworth to the north. Before A56 was built, there was the Walmersley Old Road, which is one of many roads in Lancashire that was constructed by Blind Jack Metcalf, a Knaresborough civil engineer who became blind at the age of 6. Despite his disability, he was the first professional road builder in the Industrial Revolution.
Walmersley is said to be derived from an Old English word that translates to clearing or Waldmer’s wood. It is one of those names that are frequently corrupted into Wamessley, Womersley and Walmsley.
In November 2003, the Walmersley conservation area was designated. This included the former school and the school master’s house, Christ Church and its courtyard, and the Spur Petroleum site that is home to buildings of the former Walmersley Brewery. All of these showcase elements of mid to late 19th-century architecture of stone buildings.
Exploring the conservation area would be perfect for history lovers. If you want to make it a romantic date, be sure to send flowers to Walmersley to make the occasion more memorable.
Located on Walmersley Road, Christ Church was built beside the then ‘new’ road. But when a new church was built in 1883, only the east window of the first church was kept and built into the neo-gothic designed building. The new church was designed by Maxwell and Tuke, the same company that created the Blackpool Tower and the Technical School in Broad Street, which is now being refurbished to become the Fusilier Museum.
Built in 1615, it is believed to be the oldest property in Walmersley. It was home to the Kay family that has some very interesting background. Richard Kay, who is said to have built the house, is married to Alice Kay whose brother, Robert Kay, was the father of the man who invented the flying shuttle – John Kay.
The surface of Walmersley is hilly, with the occasional Walmersley flowers, making it ideal for golf. It presents certain challenges, after all, and the Walmersley Golf Club definitely fits the bill. Located on the hills above Bury, it is a great spot for playing golf, whether you are a beginner or professional. When visiting, be sure to bring your golf shoes and clubs.
