In November 2003, the Walmersley conservation area was designated. This included the former school and the school master’s house, Christ Church and its courtyard, and the Spur Petroleum site that is home to buildings of the former Walmersley Brewery. All of these showcase elements of mid to late 19th-century architecture of stone buildings.

Christ Church

Located on Walmersley Road, Christ Church was built beside the then ‘new’ road. But when a new church was built in 1883, only the east window of the first church was kept and built into the neo-gothic designed building. The new church was designed by Maxwell and Tuke, the same company that created the Blackpool Tower and the Technical School in Broad Street, which is now being refurbished to become the Fusilier Museum.

Baldingstone House

Built in 1615, it is believed to be the oldest property in Walmersley. It was home to the Kay family that has some very interesting background. Richard Kay, who is said to have built the house, is married to Alice Kay whose brother, Robert Kay, was the father of the man who invented the flying shuttle – John Kay.
