HISTORY

Barton Stacey has a history of more than 4,000 years with traces of Neolithic, Roman, Saxon and Norman occupation.

The name of the parish is taken from Saxon times when it was known as Bertun, a Royal Manor of Edward the Confessor. In 1206, the Manor was bestowed on Sir Rogo de Stacey.

The earliest sign of habitation dates to the Neolithic period in the form of burial mounds on Moody's Down. Exhibits on the early inhabitants of the area can be found at the Iron Age Museum in Andover, which is seven miles away.

Evidence of Roman occupation comes in the form of a camp located east of Manor Farm. In 1977, further evidence of Roman habitation cropped up when a plank burial of a young woman was discovered.

The Saxons lived in Barton Stacey where the farmland was useful for them. The traces they left include the trackways which run southwards along the boundary of the parish to Wonston.

The Normans' contribution to the village lies in the parish church, which to this day has some 12th-century stonework.
