The village itself sits very close to Head Down, a tree covered hiss that is one of the highest point in all of South Downs. You can see Oakham Hill and War Down, two other high points on either side of Head Down. You can travel to Buriton easily by car, but if you are taking the train the nearest railway station located just north of Petersfield which puts it about two miles from Buriton.
What You Can Find in Buriton
Although a relatively small village, it does offer a number of amenities which provides entertainment for the residents and attracts tourists from around the UK. The village offers a few pubs, two tennis courts, a large pond with fish and ducks, the village hall, car park, two prominent inns called The Maple Inn and The Five Bells, and the Church of St. Mary. Unfortunately, the village does not offer any shopping opportunities, but it does boast a primary school which provides education for children that live in and surround the village.
For those who love to walk, the town does offer some excellent places to stretch the legs and see the sights. The Sussex Border Path goes through South Harting and the village itself is next to the Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the South Downs National Park.
Although Buriton has been around for many centuries, it has never enjoyed any period of large growth in part because of its location near Petersfield which attracted more residents and the often steep grade of the terrain which prevented a proper railway station from being built despite the railroad passing very near the community. The most famous resident of Buriton was Edward Gibbon who wrote the classic Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire as well as many other works. Gibbon lived in the community for much of the latter half of the 18the century.
Buriton is a quiet, pleasant village that retains a powerful sense of identity with many of its residents having been born and raised in the community.
