The name of East Woodhay has undergone through many changes all throughout the years. It is believed that name of the village comes from the Old English “Wudeuhege” or “Wudeugehaeg” which means wood enclosure made from artificial fences.
Descriptions of the village, such as the one mentioned in Highways and Byways in Hampshire in 1908 by H Moutray Read, describes the village as very rural and having residences that are within close proximity to the railway station. The place is also characterized by gravel roads with fine views that grow wild as one gets further away from the railways.
