Romsey is beside the River Test. The River Test flows sixty-four kilmetres down to the sea. It’s a popular spot for fly fishing enthusiasts, and trout is predominantly caught here.
The name Romsey possible came from “Rum’s Eg”, and may have meant Rum’s area surrounded by marsh, with Rum being the name of the leader of the town.
Many famous people have lived in Romsey. William Petty was a 17th century philosopher and economist who lived here. Lord Palmerston, a 19th century prime minister called this town his home, as well as the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a 20th century soldier.
Romsey Abby was found in 907 AD. A group of nun’s under direction of Edward the Elder founded a community. In 960, the nunnery was refounded. In 993 the Vikings attacked the town, and burned down the church. The village soon recovered, and the abbey was built of stone in 1000. The abbey was a popular place of learning for children, and a market was established outside the abbey gates.
Embley Park is located on the outskirt of Romsey. This is a country estate where Florence Nightingale lived. She stressed the values of sanitation, and laid the foundation for today’s nursing practices. Florence is said to have received her calling from God while sitting under a big cedar tree on this estate.
Romsey has a Memorial Park. It contains a Japanese WWII artillery gun, brought back by Lord Mountbatten. Once a year the Mayor hosts the annual Mayor’s picnic. Local school bands provide musical entertainment. There are stalls that sell fresh produce and crafts, and there is the popular duck race.
