The name Romsey possible came from “Rum’s Eg”, and may have meant Rum’s area surrounded by marsh, with Rum being the name of the leader of the town.
Many famous people have lived in Romsey. William Petty was a 17th century philosopher and economist who lived here. Lord Palmerston, a 19th century prime minister called this town his home, as well as the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a 20th century soldier.

The abbey was a popular place of learning for children, and a market was established outside the abbey gates.
Embley Park is located on the outskirt of Romsey. This is a country estate where Florence Nightingale lived.
