Sutton St Nicholas, Hereford
Hereford is a city located in the West of England knownas an important historical city and a city surrounded with a beautiful nature. One of the places where you can explore the countryside in this region is the picturesque village of Sutton St Nicholas. This interesting village is located about 4 miles north of the City of Hereford. What is interesting about this village is the fact that it is surrounded by countryside in all directions. This is a very old village and that’s why it is not unusual to see some very old houses that are more than 5 centuries old and some new ones built in the recent years. It has a population of about 800 inhabitants.
The name Sutton derived from South Town a place that was one important spot south of Leominster. Sutton St Nicholas was a separate parish from Sutton St Michael but they were reunited in the 19th century. This village is located on the banks of the famous River Lugg and it also has access to a marshy land from one side. The British tribes were active in this region since the Iron Age and we can see that thanks to the so-called Sutton Walls – a hill fort that was used since 4th century BC. According to some historians, Offa (the King of Mercia) has a palace here. The Anglo-Saxons were living in this region since 6th century BC. During the Civil War this village was damaged and almost destroyed by the continuous battles between royalists and puritan troops.

The church of St. Nicholas
This beautiful church was built in the 12th century during the lordship of Freine (de Fresne) family. Many people in the past called this place Sutton Freen because of that. During the 13th and the 14t century the church has expanded. The spire has to be removed in the 18th century because of the high cost of maintenance and repairs. The church was partially renovated in the 19th and 20th century.
