Flower Delivery Credenhill – The Beautiful Ancient Village in Herefordshire
Playing a vital role in military operations from 80 BC until today, Credenhill would seem like a place perfect for war and history buffs. But there is more to this village than its links to armies and battles. It is home to a rich and mesmerising landscape and protected woodlands that make it one of the best places to see autumn colours in Britain. It also boasts of taking part in the history of one of Herefordshire's key industries, cider production.
Credenhill is truly a place full of interesting stories that will leave you coming back for more each time you visit.
The Iron Age Celts built a hill fort and earthwork defence system in 80 BC to have command of the surrounding area. In 480 AD, Saxons occupied what was left of the old fort, and a Saxon Chief named Creda took command of the hill in 540 AD. This brought birth to the name 'Creda's Hill' that is now Credenhill. Excavations on the hill fort revealed evidence of storage pits, a quarry ditch, and pottery dating back to 400 BC.
The village continued to take an important part in war history until the more modern times. It was occupied by an army unit and used as an ammunition storage area during World War I. In 1939, the land was requisitioned, and since then, it became a station for a range of training schools for the Royal Air Force. It is now the location of the base for the Special Air Service 22 Regiment.
Another highlight in the history of the village was when the great cider company of Bulmers was founded. In 1887, Percy Bulmer used a neighbour's old stone press and picked apples from his father's rectory garden to make the first batch of cider. He partnered with his brother Fred to buy a field and build a mill, giving birth to a company that is now responsible for 60 percent of the cider production in the UK.
Today, the former farming community is partly a dormitory town for its neighbour Hereford, but it remains to still be one of the most interesting places to explore in Herefordshire.
Activities and Attractions
1. Traherne Festival - In the 17th century, Credenhill was also where the famous English poet and religious writer, Thomas Traherne, served as rector for 10 years. Every summer, there is a festival dedicated to him and his works where one can enjoy musical performances and talks.
2. Credenhill Park Wood – This designated special wildlife site is a local landmark and a must-see attraction. It is best to visit in spring when Credenhill flowers are in full bloom, such as the herb Paris and purple orchid. Autumn is also a good time to explore the woodlands and enjoy the breathtaking colours of the landscape.
3. Church of St. Mary – This is the parish church and it is a Grade I listed building. It is a beautiful stone structure built in the 13th century on the side of a hill.
